FLOOD: Three children, mothers, others swept away
It was a black Friday in Abeokuta, as some parts of the Ogun State capital recorded massive flood that swept away many people, including two mothers, three children, two young boys and many valuables.
The multi-hour downpour pounded the city and environs on evening in an apocalyptic manner.
What started arround 4pm, like a normal rainfall, reportedly stopped, by some accounts, around 8pm in some areas..
It caught residents by surprise.
Sunday Vanguard gathered that the development was as a result of the drainage challenges and poor construction of buildings along flood channels in the state capital, a situation the state government has been battling to resolve.
Sources familiar with the environmental challenges of Abeokuta reported that properties worth millions of Naira had been destroyed.
Gov Amosun
In the wake of what some have described as flash flooding, the state governor, Senator Ibikunle Amosun immediately ordered some of his commissioners to swing into action, visiting some of the affected areas just as the raisns were about to subside.
Sunday Vanguard gathered from sources that the magnitude of the flooding would have been far more devastating than what happened, had the dam (OYAN) not been slightly opened to allow for the release of some volume of water.
Sunday Vanguard was made to understand that the release of some volume of water eased the pressure on the dam, without which the level of disaster would have been worse.
According to Governor Amosun in a telephone converstaion with Sunday Vanguard, “what happened on Friday caused flash flooding but we still have to thank God Almighty that the situation was saved because the pressure that would have been brought to bear on the dam had authorities not acted on time would have been something else. Mercifully, the water is recedding.
“Immediately we got wind of what was happening in some areas, we put in place a quick response team that saw to it that what could be saved in some areas were saved.
“Part of what we also did was to manage the information so that panic would not set in.”
As at the time of going to press, assessment of the level of damage was still being carried out by officials of the state government.
Sunday Vanguard gathered that as soon as some parts of Abeokuta began experinece the early stages of flash flooding, some residents began making frantic calls to friends and relatives in other parts, creating a situation that compounded the challenge of human and vehicular movement.
Swept Away
The number of casualties is yet to be confirmed but early reports indicated that a woman and her two children were swept away in the Ago-Ijesha area of the state capital.
Sunday Vanguard further gathered that in the same area, a mother and her toddler-daughter, were swept away by the flood during the torrential rain.
At the Adatan area, two young boys were reportedly killed while the attendant thunder storm, we gathered, killed a young man in Ijebu Ode.
Destruction
It was gathered that in Isabo, Amolaso, Sokori, Lafenwa, Brewery, Iyana Montuary, Obada, Itori, Kuto and other areas, the story of anguish and pain remained the same as affected people were seen gnashing their teeth and lamenting over their material loses, while those who lost their family members cried ceaselessly
It was gathered that the rains also submerged houses in the area, particularly those along river banks around Amolaso, Isabo and Isale Igbein axis.
Even worship centres were not spared, as the Archdiocesan Headquarters of the Celestial Church of Christ, Ijaye, Abeokuta, was also severely hit while dozens of homes within the area were affected.
It was observed that at Ijaye, some of the residential buildings either collapsed or have consequently been made to be unsafe for habitation.
Also, the havoc by the torrential rain did not spare educational institutions as some also lost their properties and materials.
Areas hardest-hit were Ijaye, Omolasho, Kuto, Isale-Igbein, Lafenwa, Olomore, Ita-Aka and Ijeja, where the flood damaged the bridge linking Ijeja and other parts of the state capital.
Sunday Vanguard’s findings showed that billions of naira worth of properties were destroyed by the ravaging, massive flood.
Also, it was obaerved that scores of residents were sacked from their homes and shops when their apartments were either submerged or brought down by the flood. Household items, goods and other valuables were destroyed.
When Sunday Vanguard visited Omolasho and Kuto, which are major commercial areas of Abeokuta, goods and structures worth millions of naira had been swept away and emptied into a canal by the Isabo State High Court area, where the flood was most violent and fiercest.
Dozens of vehicles packed by the roadsides were also submerged, while some of them were dragged into gullies and pits.
Some youths were sighted battling to dig up one Toyota car buried near the Holy Cross Hospital, Ijaye, Abeokuta, by the devastating flood.
Gridlock
It was further learnt that bridges and vehicles were as well submerged by the flood, just as human and vehicular movements were affected.
There was a lockdown as thousands were stranded on their way from work and places of business for hours, following the massive flood that took over all access roads.
And whereas there were series of vehicular diversions, the flooded city became a scene of panic as there was no clear way to move in and out, while the rushing water spelt danger for many.
Another eyewitness’ account said there had been traffic gridlock for outbound and inbound vehicles of Olomore/Ita Oshin (the popular garrage); and human traffic created by residents who rushed out to watch the flow of the flood, further compounded the situation, thereby making the roads impassable.
The flood caused a gridlock everywhere as some of the bridges were almost completely submerged and motorists had to scamper here and there to find their way home. Many who did not know how to maneuver their way spent hours in the tiring and frustrating traffic jam.
Some visitors could not complete their journey while some travellers, we gathered, passed the night on the road.
May says Trump told her to ‘sue the EU’
US President Donald Trump told British Prime Minister Theresa May she should sue the European Union rather than negotiate with them, she said Sunday.
May said Trump’s self-declared “brutal” option in the Brexit negotiations was to sue Brussels, shedding light on his mysterious suggestion that has hung over their talks and his four-day visit to Britain.
“He told me I should sue the EU. Sue the EU,” May told BBC television.
The unknown Trump option had been hanging in the air for days.
In an interview with The Sun newspaper on Thursday ahead of his talks with May, Trump said he had told May how to deal with Brussels but she “didn’t listen”.
“I would have done it much differently. I actually told Theresa May how to do it but she didn’t agree, she didn’t listen to me. She wanted to go a different route,” he said.
“She probably went the opposite way.”
In a press conference after their talks Friday, Trump said it had been a suggestion rather than advice.
“I think maybe she found it too brutal,” he said, standing alongside May, without revealing the details.
“I could fully understand why she thought it was tough. And maybe someday she’ll do that. If they don’t make the right deal she may do what I suggested but it’s not an easy thing.”
‘Would have been great’
And when pressed in a newspaper interview afterwards, Trump still declined to reveal what his suggestion was.
“I recommended her something, I gave her an option, I’d rather not tell you what that option is, but I think she might,” he told The Mail on Sunday newspaper.
“I think it would’ve been great, but it’s not too late for her to do that, necessarily.”
May finally revealed what Trump had told her.
“He told me I should sue the EU. Sue the EU. Not go into negotiations, sue them. Actually, no, we’re going into negotiations with them,” she said.
“What the president also said at that press conference was don’t walk away. Don’t walk away from negotiations because then you’re stuck,” she added.
“So I want us to be able to sit down to negotiate the best deal for Britain.”
The UK is due to leave the EU in March 2019.
May’s proposals for Britain’s future relationship with Brussels, published Thursday, foresee an overall “association agreement” with the EU encompassing different deals on different areas.
Britain and the EU would maintain a “common rulebook” for goods to ensure smooth trade including in agricultural, food and fisheries products.

Novak Djokovic is the overwhelming favourite to secure a fourth Wimbledon title on Sunday but he admits he feared his best days were behind him when his career nose-dived over the last year.
The 31-year-old former world number one won the last of his 12 majors at the 2016 French Open when he completed the career Grand Slam.
And after a shattering quarter-final exit at this year’s Roland Garros, which saw his world ranking slump to its lowest in 12 years, the Serb even considered sitting out Wimbledon where he has been champion in 2011, 2014 and 2015.
However, on Saturday, Djokovic was the big-hitting, chest-pumping star of old as he defeated old rival Rafael Nadal 6-4, 3-6, 7-6 (11/9), 3-6, 10-8 in an epic semi-final to book a Sunday title showdown with Kevin Anderson.
“Yes, there were moments of doubt, of frustration, disappointment, where you’re questioning whether you want to keep it going,” said Djokovic back in a Slam final for the first time since finishing runner-up at the 2016 US Open.
It was at Wimbledon last year where his troubles started.
An elbow injury forced a retirement in his quarter-final and he sat out the rest of 2017.
He was then knocked out of the Australian Open in the last 16 in January by Hyeon Chung, then ranked at 58.
Taro Daniel, the 109-ranked Japanese player, stunned in him in Indian Wells before Benoit Paire, at 47 in the rankings, knocked him out in Miami.

“I managed to overcome challenges and obstacles, get myself to the final of a Slam,” added Djokovic, whose 5-hour 15-minute win over Nadal was the fifth longest singles match ever played at Wimbledon.
“Obviously if you told me that six months ago, I would take it right away.
“But did I truly believe that I can get back on the level? Yes, I mean, it’s hard for me to play tennis and not believe that I can be the best in what I do.”

The bloc, following its formation, signed a memorandum of understanding with other parties to create a coalition under the name the Coalition of United Political Parties (CUPP).
“Saraki must declare now where he belongs, whether he is for APC or other political interests. He cannot serve God and mammon. He cannot play hide-and-seek. He cannot hide behind his fingers,” Mr Nabena said.
“Saraki has never hidden his sympathy for those who have launched a vicious attack on the APC, a party that gave both him and the nascent mudslingers the platform on which they ply their political careers.
“The APC is not averse to dissenting positions. But we reject deceit in every shade or form.
“We are also not unaware of the fact that Saraki is the brawn and the brains of the so-called Reformed All Progressives Congress (R-APC).
Mr Nabena said the senate president’s current activities are a betrayal of his position at the last national convention of APC, where he urged the new leadership of the party to carry everyone along in the effort to improve the party and enhance its chances ahead of the impending political contests in the country.
“It is clear that Saraki has not learnt any lessons from his initial betrayal of APC in 2015, when he traded off the party’s right to produce the deputy senate president for his selfish ambition of becoming the senate president.”
He said APC is a democratic institution and Mr Saraki is free to make choices in accordance with the laws of the country but he cannot continue to take members of APC for a ride.
“Politics is based on trust. Saraki has betrayed the trust reposed on him by the party. If he wants to leave APC, let him leave peacefully, and not try to destroy a house that gave him accommodation when he needed it most.
“His current attitude can only be the action of a traitor or a double agent.”
Reacting to this, the Kwara State Chapter of the party cautioned Mr Nabena to stay within the mandate of his new position, and stop his campaign of uninformed comments against the president of the senate.
PREMIUM TIMES reported how the Kwara APC pledged total allegiance to Mr Saraki.
In a statement by the state publicity secretary, Sulyman Buhari, the Kwara APC noted that Mr Nabena should first clarify if he was speaking on behalf of his superiors in the APC National Working Committee (NWC) or he was running errand for some faceless elements who are his “paymasters.”
“The Kwara APC has taken note of the immature display of lack of decorum by one Yekinni Nabena in a statement he issued today calling the Senate President names. Nabena needs to first clarify if he was speaking on behalf of the National Working Committee of the APC or representing some faceless mischievous elements who are his paymasters.
“Instead of embarrassing himself with his meaningless diatribe that demonstrates his lack of decorum and immaturity for the position he has accidentally found himself to be occupying, Nabena should focus on understanding what his current position entails.
“This is necessary because his preparedness and capacity have definitely been called into question by his antics. He definitely cannot use Saraki’s name to get cheap popularity and buy relevance.
The chapter said it believes that at the right time, their leader, would make his decision known to the whole world when he is ready as he doesn’t owe anyone an explanation.
“As a grassroots politician who believes in carrying everyone along and works in the best interest of the people at the state and national levels, Saraki does not owe an unknown factor like Nabena any response or explanation. Instead, at the right time, I am sure that his friends, supporters, associates, all Nigerians and the entire world will know where he stands on issues regarding 2019 elections.
“Saraki that we know does not hide to play his politics. He plays in the open. Those who feel uncomfortable with his rising profile will continue to (belly-ache) for a long time to come. In fact, we enjoy the way he is making his opponents fret and suffer insomnia by his silence,” the Kwara APC stated.”
Ekiti election, political robbery – Wike

THE Rivers State Governor, Chief Nyesom Wike, has described what transpired during the Ekiti governorship election as the worst political robbery in the nation’s democratic history.
Wike said the APC Federal Government would not be able to replicate the “Ekiti political robbery” in Rivers State because people of the state were fully prepared.
He spoke on Sunday at the Anglican Cathedral Church of Saint Paul, Port Harcourt, during the thanksgiving service to mark the end of Third Year Anniversary Celebration of his administration.
“Don’t be worried about what happened in Ekiti State. We are prepared. It will not happen here in Rivers State. I have never experienced that kind of robbery in politics.
“I told my colleagues, do not give them any chance. Most of them in APC are happy that they will repeat the same thing in Rivers State, we are waiting; come and repeat. Let your spirit not be down, work hard and victory will be ours,” he added.
Speaking on the thanksgiving, Wike said that the state government had come before God to appreciate him for a hitch-free programme, which spread across two months
He said that the third year anniversary of his administration offered Rivers people the opportunity to witness the superlative performance over the period under the review.
“We made sure that people, who have eyes, see what we have done for the state. Except those who are blind, for which there is nothing we can do about it.
“We will continue to do the best for the people of Rivers State. The people deserve the best. This one year we will not stopdoing projects, irrespective of the elections”.
Obama visits Kenyan family, to launch youth centre
Former US president Barack Obama paid a visit to his extended family in Kenya Monday, on his first trip to the country since 2015 during which he will open a youth centre.
Obama arrived in his father’s native Kenya on Sunday, where he paid courtesy calls on President Uhuru Kenyatta and main opposition leader Raila Odinga.
On Monday he flew to the west of the country, where under extremely tight security he paid a visit to the home of his step-grandmother Sarah Obama in the village of Kogelo, an AFP reporter said.
He was expected to meet a number of members of his extended family, before launching the Sauti Kuu (Swahili for “Strong Voices”) centre set up by his half-sister Auma Obama.
Addressing the media last week, Auma said the state-of-the-art centre would give local youth access to books, internet and sporting activities.
They will also be able to benefit from classes on work ethics, civic education, environmental conservation and financial literacy.
The centre includes an international standard size football pitch sponsored by the German ministry of development cooperation, a basketball court funded by the Giants of Africa Foundation, and a volleyball/netball court and other facilities, including a library and IT lab.
The centre is set to also offer adult education.
When Obama visited Kenya in 2015, he was unable to visit his father’s village due to security concerns, and vowed to return when he was no longer “wearing a suit” and contribute to the development of young people.
After his visit to Kenya, Obama will fly to South Africa where he will deliver the annual Nelson Mandela lecture.

Ibadan OAP, Olufemi Oluwajobi dies in car accident on 31st night
An Ibadan based newscaster, Olufemi Oluwajobi is dead.
Oluwajobi died after he was knocked down by an alleged drunk driver in the night of 31st December, 2017.
It was learnt that Oluwajobi, fondly known as Radio MD (Music Dynamite), was on his way to join some friends at Palms Mall, venue of Ibadan Countdown.
Oluwajobi, who was until his death a newscaster with Ibadan based radio station, Fresh FM, was rushed to the University Teaching Hospital (UCH) where he later died.
Oluwajobi was said to have left his car at home because of traffic, and was hit while waiting to take a motorcycle also known as Okada to Ring road.
Femi was said to be an open hearted, humble and hardworking media practitioner during his lifetime.
His remains has been buried today, Tuesday, January 2, 2018 at Sango Cemetery in Ibadan.
The deceased is survived by his wife and children.
